It’s quite annoying to realise that there is no tortilla bread when I fancy making wraps after having my daily shopping done. I wouldn’t want to to go back to the shop to buy one so I make my own one instead when I have a day like this. When I have some leftovers, I reheat them in the microwave for a few seconds and enjoy with hummus or make more wraps next day.

This tortilla bread is
  • Easy to make with a few everyday-ingredients
  • Soft and fluffy
  • Great with any fillings if you make wraps
  • Nice to serve as a side
  • Budget friendly

Its’ very easy and cheap to make tortilla bread at home, moreover, it’s tastes more delicious compared to the shop bought ones! Are you thinking of making wraps today? Try making this tortilla bread and wrap anything that you have in your kitchen! I had a packet of vegan cutlets in the freezer so I used them for the filling 🙂

Ingredients needed
  • Plain flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Sunflower oil
  • Warm water (like a temperature of baby milk)
Quick making guide
  1. Mix the flour, baking powder, salt together in a bowl .
  2. Add the oil, mix and rub into the flour using your fingers until it forms coarse crumbles.
  3. Pour in the warm water and mix to combine using your hand and knead for a few minutes until it forms a soft and smooth dough.
  4. Divide the dough into 5 or 6 rolls and allow them to rest for 30 minutes.
  5. On a floured surface, roll each piece with a rolling pin into a thin, 8 inch (about) circle.
  6. Heat a frying pan or a iron skillet until very hot and carefully place one rolled dough in.
  7. When you see bubbles start to appear after about 40 to 60 seconds, flip over and cook the other side for 40 to 60 seconds.
  8. Keep your cooked tortilla covered with a piece of clothes until ready to serve.

If the mixture is still sticky, when you combine everything together to form a dough, add more flour (little by little) to adjust the consistency. I usually make them quite big but if you prefer to make them smaller, divide the dough into 7 or 8. Resting the dough is very important for the tortillas to be cooked soft so please do not skip this step. When you cook the tortillas, please make sure not to over cook them, otherwise they will be crunchy and it’s hard to wrap!

Ingredients

  • Plain flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Sunflower oil or any other unflavoured oil
  • Warm water like a temperature of baby milk

Instructions

  • Mix the flour, baking powder, salt together in a bowl. Add the oil, mix and rub into the flour using your fingers until it forms coarse crumbles.
  • Pour in the warm water and mix to combine using your hand and knead for a few minutes until it forms a soft and smooth dough.
  • Divide the dough into 5 or 6 rolls and allow them to rest for about 30 minutes with a cover on.
  • On a floured surface, roll each piece with a rolling pin into *a thin, 8 inch (about) circle.
  • *Heat a frying pan or a iron skillet until very hot and carefully place one rolled dough in.
  • *When you see bubbles start to appear after about 40 to 60 seconds, flip over and cook the other side for 40 to 60 seconds.
  • *Keep your cooked tortilla covered with a piece of clothes until ready to serve.

Notes

*Make sure it’s very thin that you can almost see through. The size might be bigger than 8 inch if you are making 5 tortilla like mine but that’s ok, it’s easy to wrap with bigger ones 🙂
*The pan should be very hot before you put in the tortilla, otherwise it will stick to the pan and won’t cook nicely.
*Please do not overcook the tortillas, they will be crunchy and too hard for wrapping when they are cooked too much.
*Keeping the cooked tortillas covered helps them to stay soft.
*Leftovers will keep in a covered container up to 2 days in the fridge. Microwave for 30 seconds to reheat as an easy option.
